(Roseburg, OR) - Mercy Foundation’s Youth Diabetes program has been awarded a grant from the CommonSpirit Mission and Ministry Fund.
The grant is for a total of $133,407 and the funds will support the Mercy Foundation’s youth Type 1 diabetes (T1D) program, Beyond the Diagnosis. Type 1 diabetes is a complex and costly disease with no cure. The stress for families of T1D youth is immense. Currently, Douglas County families with a child diagnosed with T1D are left to navigate a healthcare system with little support and no local access to care.
“Beyond the Diagnosis – Living with Type 1 Diabetes” is an integrated system of wrap-around services focused on diabetes management, the prevention of further health complications, connection to care, education, access to resources and social/emotional support. The project will also help to expand access to an endocrinologist through telemedicine to relieve families of the necessity of having to travel six hours for care.
“We are so grateful for this grant opportunity from CommonSpirit Mission and Ministry. Their generous grant allows us to continue supporting local children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and their families.” Jamie Vanassche, Youth Diabetes Education Coordinator, “As the parent of a child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, I know first hand the struggles these families face and how much it means to them to have a local program available to help bring awareness and connection to resources. Our T1D families are so thankful for the continued support they receive from our community.”
